A small kit, still very young, laid in the cold hollow of a big tree, no warmth and no milk. He could rarely move and he just mewed, waiting for someone to find him. For three days, he laid there, barely alive. He lost all of his fat and was nothing but bones and very thin fur. His eyes were still closed and his throat hurt from his mewing. He's been calling out for his mom, wanting her milk and her warmth. He couldnt feel his tiny body as the heat slowly drained from him. He shivered, his little, fluffy body rattling and his long fur was still short. He felt very weak from lack of love and comfort but he continued to mew. His eerie mew echoed across the land, even though it was week. He stoped as he felt another being walking into the den. He mewed, not knowing to be happy or scared. He stoped when he felt something gently grabing him by the back of his neck and carried him. After a few minutes, he felt the something gently laying him on the ground. The tiny, cold kit started to mew once again, not knowing where he is.

Dapplefur was lying in the nursery by herself. Her two kits had been killed by the greencough that came every leaf-bare. She still grieved and, as a cat pushed into the nursery, Dapplefur's tail bushed, her fur bristling, and she let out a furious hiss. She saw it was a friend of hers, a loyal warrior. She relaxed and mewed a greeting, but paused when she saw a little black kit dangling in his jaws. He set it down by her belly and Dapplefur recoiled slightly. The warrior looked at her with sympathy. "Dapplefur, I know it won't replace your sons. However, this kit will die without a mother to care for it. You have milk to spare, Dapplefur." The cat reasoned. Dapplefur sighed. "Alright, I'll care for him. I shall call him... Shadowkit." She murmured and guided the little tom to her belly with a hind paw. She nuzzled it tenderly. "My little Shadowkit. You will grow strong and healthy." She cooed and watched the kit with adoring eyes. Sunset came and went and at moonhigh, Dapplefur decided she needed to stretch her legs. She yawned widely and stood up carefully, as to not wake up Shadowkit, and padded into the clearing. She stared at the warriors of StarClan. "Thank you." She whispered. "Thank you for a second chance at being a mother." She blinked thankfully at the stars.
